Innistrad Remastered – January 24, 2025
Innistrad Remastered is the latest in an increasingly long line of remastered sets, which, simply put, are ‘best of’ sets that combine previous products from a plane and put them all together in one draftable set. Innistrad Remastered brings together hugely iconic and powerful cards from everyone’s favourite gothic world of Innistrad and is full of fantastic reprints, and incredible variations – whether they are the retro border, or the monster poster treatments!
Atherdrift – February 14, 2025
Despite its Valentine’s Day release date, there’s not much romance in the death-race set of Aetherdrift (that is, unless Chandra trying to win the aetherspark for her love interest Nissa counts?!). Set across three planes, Avishkar (formerly Kaladesh), Amonkhet, and the never-before-seen land of Muraganda, there 10 teams, one for each colour pair, racing for the grand prize… time will tell if Chandra is successful in her cause! Expect lots of vehicles, the return of saddles and mounts, and our favourite red Planeswalker riding a motorbike!
Tarkir: Dragonstorm – April 11, 2025
Tarkir is one of the game’s most beloved planes – a world where dragons were extinct, but then thanks to Fate Reforged and a little time travel, returned once again with avengeance. We’ve not been to the Central and Eastern Asian inspired plane for a decade, so there will no doubt be a lot of changes since we were last there. Apparently the set will include both elements of the previous block; the much-loved three colour clans, as well as the huge and powerful dragons. It’ll mark the conclusion of the ‘Dragonstorm’ story arc which we are currently going through… although we don’t know a lot about it.
Final Fantasy – June 13, 2025
I’ll hold my hands up – I’ve barely played more than a few hours of a Final Fantasy game, but even I know that the franchise is one of the most enduring, iconic and well loved in computer game history… so much so, that this Universes Beyond release is an entire set! Wizards has already said it’ll be a lot like the The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth release, so expect everyone and things from the game’s history to appear, with multiple versions of characters very likely. The other big change to note is that from this point on, these Universes Beyond releases will be Standard legal, pushing up the desirability even more.
Edge of Eternities – August 1, 2025
My bold prediction – I think this will be the release of the year (in terms of Magic IP, at least, with Final Fantasy or Spiderman likely to be the biggest selling overall). Edge of Eternities is the ‘space opera’ set, which I'm imagining will be heavily inspired by Star Wars and that perfect balance between space and magic. The Edge of Eternities will surely be about The Blind Eternities, which is the space between planes and where the eldrazi are from – so I’d expect them to be the ‘aliens’ in the setting, potentially an existential threat. Oh, and Tezzert is up to something too!
Marvel Spiderman
Wizards has struck a major deal with Marvel, so we’re going to be seeing A LOT of Marvel releases over the coming years, with a dedicated Spiderman set later in 2025. Given the usual cadence, it’ll be released around October, maybe even with spiders tying into Halloween. In terms of the set, we can expect all kinds of versions of the webcrawler from across the Spiderverse, and of course all his iconic foes too.
Unknown Universes Beyond set
The final set of the year is an unknown, or at least unannounced, Universe Beyond set. While we don’t know anything about it officially, there’s a very strong hint that it could be Avatar the Last Airbender based on some unusual MTG Arena activity over Christmas, with ‘bending’ and elemental cards going on sale last year…
Themes and Mechanics in 2025 Sets
With Aetherdrift not even on the shelves yet, there’s a limited amount of information we know about the themes and mechanics of 2025, however the story running through them combined with the set names does give us some clues. The Omenpaths continue to be a key thread, making planar travel possible for just about anyone. That has enabled the death race of Aetherdrift, and next brings us to Tarkir and the mystery around dragonstorms that seem to be happening everywhere, including back in Bloomburrow. Dragons and three-colour wedge clans will appear to go along with the two colour racing teams of Aetherdrift, and while we know little about Edge of Eternities, it may be we see yet more vehicles (given its about space travel) and also colourless, or at least devoid, eldrazi.
Then of course we have our two big Universes Beyond sets, from which we can expect them to be a little less insular than in the past, given that they will be Standard legal.
Most Anticipated MTG Sets of 2025
With so little known about the sets beyond Innistrad Remastered and Aetherdrift, we’re still in the guessing stage of what we might see, however players are already sharing their excitement about returning to the fan favourite of Tarkir and the potential of a space set with Edge of Eternities. Fans of Marvel and Final Fantasy too are gushing about some of their favourite characters and worlds appearing in their own, draftable, Standard-legal sets.
From what we know, there are some mega reprints in Innistrad Remastered, including various versions of Edgar Markov, and retro border treatments for iconic cards players will love.
Storywise, I think there’s a good chance we’re going to meet some pretty big villains again soon – possibly Nicol Bolas with Tarkir, and/or the eldrazi with Edge of Eternities.

With so much to look forward to in 2025, players and collectors need to strategise about which products are for them. For players it's simple, keep an eye-out for previews and consider pre-orders before the prices spike for the very best cards. There are usually plenty of articles and podcasts out there with experts and pro-players giving their top tips for big hits. For collectors, while every set has potential to become collectable in years to come, those with desirable serialised cards inside will always hold more value than those that don’t (and with the new ‘headliner’ card series, that should be all sets in 2025!), while Final Fantasy and Spiderman are always going to be highly desired.
